The best definition I can commit to is: a game that uses the conventions and terminology of pen and paper RPGs, such as Dungeons and Dragons-and even that is far too wide a net. This is, of course, one of several reasons why the "RPG" is so difficult to pin down. Many games incorporate RPG elements in this way-as well they should, they're good mechanics. For instance, Devil May Cry 3 features a leveling system not unlike Final Fantasy II (using a style to kill dudes fills a mater up, which results in that style gaining a level) but to say it's an RPG based on this would be wrong. I would actually disagree with you there, insofar as a game's use of RPG elements does not by itself make it an RPG.
